Sarah J Patterson is a British fabric and surface pattern designer and the founder of Sarah JP Design and Sewing-Sanctuary. A lifelong love of sewing, first nurtured by her mother, developed into a career devoted to fabric, pattern and the pleasure of making.
Working from the English countryside, Sarah creates collections shaped by personal memory, nature, British heritage and the landscapes surrounding her home in Eversholt. Florals, wildlife and small observed details become patterns with a strong sense of place and story.
Her approach combines thoughtful storytelling with an understanding of how fabric is ultimately used — designed not simply to be seen, but to become part of something made and treasured.
Sarah's story
A life shaped by fabric, teaching and place
Sarah’s relationship with textiles began at home, learning to sew with her mother. That early connection between fabric, making and memory continues to influence her work today.
With a professional background in education and child development, Sarah later brought together her experience as a teacher with her lifelong interest in textiles. Through Sewing-Sanctuary, she developed a creative business encompassing fabric, sewing education and design, alongside establishing Sarah JP Design for her original textile and surface pattern work.
Sarah is an experienced teacher and sewing expert who shares her knowledge through workshops and demonstrations. Her work has also reached wider audiences through television and media, including The Great British Sewing Bee and Sewing Street.
